Life is Feudal features realistic medieval lore; little to no fantasy elements are featured. An example is no elfs. But what are the differences between realistic and fantasy lore?
Lore refers to a fun online virtual worlds history or storyline. In-game past, present and in some cases future events constitute a games lore. There are, however, clear divisions between realistic and fantasy MMORPGs. Fantasy should not be confused with fiction, as games such as Call of Duty and Chivalry: Medieval War contain realistic fictional lore.
Realism refers to a lore taking on features from real life that are historically accurate, and featuring little to no fantastical elements. Lore written with a realistic approach can be fictional, but must have technology, social structure or species that exist or existed in real life. An example of this is games set in World War II. Unless a story is completely historically canon, it would be considered a realistic fiction. When digressing from this structure, lore becomes less realistic and branches off into fantasy.
Fantasy refers to lore that partially or completely features fictional elements, such as: new planets, magic, species, social structure, technology, etc. The most defining feature for fantasy lore is historical advancement. An example of this would be that instead of advancing with electronics, society progressed using steam power (this genre is known as “Steampunk”). Interestingly, characters written for fantasy are based off a theme or moral, rather than a realistic representation of a human being.
Lore is very rarely purely realistic, and it is almost impossible for it to be completely fantasy. Realism and fantasy in lore can be plotted on a gradient, and will generally be a varying balance of the two. Life is Feudals lore is set in a realistic fictional medieval sandbox world. In summary, lore in MMORPGs will almost always feature a varying balance of fantasy and realism, meaning online fantasy games normally feature some realism, and vice versa.
