Terrain is a vital part of warfare in the PvP MMORPG: Life is Feudal. It is important to understand how to exploit terrain to your advantage during MMO combat.
High ground is excellent for ambushing and the reasons for this are twofold. Firstly, you can gather information from a much larger area in moments. The importance of information in warfare is articulated at The importance of Information warfare in a full loot MMORPG.
Secondly, high ground is very defendable, providing you cover while limiting cover for the enemy. More terraforming is required to make high ground practical for free building, but is generally worthwhile. More on this feature at Best sandbox games: terraforming and free building. High ground is not always an option, and in these situations seizing choke points becomes priority.
Choke points are narrow areas connecting two larger areas. Choke points limit a larger force from marshalling their full numbers against a smaller one during massive PvP. Always seize choke points, even if your force is larger. Denying enemies key strategic locations should always be a priority, even if your total forces would perform better in the open field.
Identifying and utilizing cover and pitfalls effectively in an open world mmo will give you the edge during PvP. Cover has two purposes. It protects from projectiles, but more importantly, breaks the enemies line of sight. Denying the enemy information on your location will grant you strategic advantages.
Pitfalls are environmental dangers like cliffs, unstable tunnels and bogs that you must maneuver. Pitfalls can wipe out an enemy forces, and you can prepare pitfalls of your own. These are exceptional for defending your settlements and entrenchments. Preparing and identifying useful cover and pitfalls will give you the edge over your enemies.
As previously mentioned, Life is Feudal features terraforming and free building. This allows you to create your own world of fortifications, pitfalls and terrain. Decide what strategies to employ, and prepare your fortifications appropriately. Ideally, always aim to deny the opponent cover while placing them at the low ground. The rest varies on the strategies you are utilizing.
Settlements on flat terrain are easily besieged, and allow your enemy to fortify their position. Rugged terrains require more terraforming to begin free building on, and cannot be used for large scale settlements. No-one should field cavalry on this terrain, but it is difficult to besiege settlements on rugged terrain.
In summary, always be aware of the terrain you are standing on. Try to maintain control over key locations such as high ground, choke points and pitfalls. When building fortifications, build with specific strategies in mind. Exploit your strengths while leaving your opponent at a disadvantage.
