To become more proficient in a play style, you must raise skills complementary to a chosen role. A logical question to ask would be “Why not raise all skills to max?”. That topic is covered in Skill and stat cap in the MMORPG like Ultima: Life is Feudal, but suffice to say that skill gain slows considerably the higher the skill becomes. More importantly, there is a total skill cap, meaning there can only be so many points allocated between skills.
So to become highly proficient in your chosen role, you must focus on skills that benefit you most. ‘Life is Feudal’ is a massively multiplayer online pc game where you can do anything. LiF contains:
But before you begin training any skills, you must decide what type of role you would find most effective or enjoyable. Once a role is chosen, deduce what skills are going to be most useful to you. This is achieved by imagining plausible scenarios, and factoring in what skills would benefit you most. Examples of play styles and imagining scenarios/factors are found below.
Once again: Life is Feudal has no class’! Any class-like names in the following text are just imaginative roles to aid in the communication of a play style.
Combat related playstyles could be: mercenary, skirmisher, bounty hunter, bandit, field medic, assassin, vanguard, and knights to name a few. Once you have chosen a combat play style, decide what skills to train. Let’s assume you want action and are going melee, what scenarios are you expecting?
If you are going to be fighting in the vanguard, it’s logical to use Heavy Plate Armor and a shield to protect yourself from inevitable injuries. If you were ambushing transports on a trade route like a bandit, you would wear lighter armors. This would make ambushing and pursuing runners easier, perhaps even utilizing mounted combat.

Non-Combat related playstyles could be: builder, farmer, miner, lord, drill sergeant, crafting, trader, and artist are suggestions. Factoring scenarios for non-combat playstyles is easier than for combat playstyles. If you want to make your own virtual world, you would become a builder. Now you decide: are you going be the architect, or constructor?
If constructing, begin raising combinations of terraforming, construction and/or construction material preparation skills. But if you were the architect, raise your Architecture and Masonry skills to allow construction sites for more advanced structures. This also enables others to begin working on these sites. More information on this feature at Best sandbox games: terraforming and free building.

In summary, Life is Feudal has no classes so play style is up to you. The key to success is in the skills you raise. This makes it ideal to select skills that benefit you most in your preferred role.
